Anna Mani was one of India's most distinguished physicists and meteorologists, whose work made India self-reliant in the design and manufacture of meteorological instruments. In a field dominated by men, and in a country where women's scientific careers were rare, Mani rose to become the Deputy Director General of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and a globally recognized expert in atmospheric physics.
Born into a prosperous Syrian Christian family in Kerala, Anna Mani was a precocious child who read voraciously and questioned everything. She defied the expectations of her conservative family to pursue science, eventually specializing in meteorological instrumentation — a niche but critical field that underpins weather forecasting, aviation safety, agriculture, and disaster preparedness.
Her most significant contribution was the development of indigenous meteorological instruments. Before her work, India imported almost all its weather equipment from Britain and the United States at considerable cost. Mani designed and built India's own instruments — from simple thermometers to complex radiation sensors — making the country independent in this strategic domain.
Anna Mani was born on August 23, 1918, in Peerumedu, a plantation town in the highlands of Kerala. Her father was a civil engineer and a prosperous cardamom planter who owned extensive estates. The family was devoutly Christian and conservative, but Anna's father encouraged her education — up to a point.
As a child, Anna was fascinated by books and science. She once famously declared, after reading the entire Encyclopaedia Britannica, that she would rather have a set of scientific instruments than the diamond earrings that were the traditional gift for a girl of her class. Her father obliged, and the instruments became her childhood companions.
She completed her schooling in Kerala and then moved to Chennai (then Madras) to pursue higher education. In 1939, she graduated with a BSc Honors in Physics and Chemistry from Presidency College, Chennai. She then won a scholarship to the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, where she worked under the Nobel laureate C.V. Raman, studying the optical properties of diamonds and rubies.
In 1945, she went to Imperial College London to specialize in meteorological instrumentation. She returned to India in 1948, just as the country was gaining independence, and joined the India Meteorological Department (IMD) — where she would spend the rest of her career.
Anna Mani joined the IMD at a pivotal moment. The newly independent India needed its own weather infrastructure — not just for agriculture and disaster management, but also for the burgeoning aviation industry and for military purposes. Mani was tasked with organizing the department's instrumentation division.
Her approach was methodical and ambitious. She began by studying the instruments that India was importing — understanding their design, their flaws, and the ways in which they were ill-suited to Indian conditions. Then she set about designing better alternatives.
Under her leadership, the IMD's instrumentation group developed and manufactured over 100 different types of meteorological instruments. These were not merely copies of foreign designs; they were adapted to Indian conditions — capable of functioning in the extreme heat of Rajasthan, the heavy monsoon rains of the Western Ghats, and the freezing temperatures of the Himalayas.
Mani was particularly concerned with the accuracy and standardization of instruments. She established calibration procedures that ensured that a thermometer in Chennai would give the same reading as one in Delhi under identical conditions. This attention to detail was essential for building a reliable national weather network.
In 1953, she became the head of the Division of Radiation Physics at IMD. She later served as the Deputy Director General of the department — one of the highest positions ever held by a woman in the Indian scientific establishment at that time.

In the 1960s and 1970s, Anna Mani turned her attention to the study of atmospheric ozone — a critical topic given the emerging understanding of the ozone layer's role in protecting life on Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation.
She set up India's first ozone monitoring stations and developed indigenous ozone-measuring instruments. Her data contributed to the global understanding of ozone distribution and variability, particularly in tropical regions where data had been sparse.
Her work on ozone became increasingly relevant in the 1980s with the discovery of the Antarctic ozone hole and the subsequent Montreal Protocol (1987). Indian data collected under Mani's supervision played a role in establishing the scientific basis for international ozone protection agreements.
Mani also studied the relationship between ozone and the monsoon, recognizing that atmospheric chemistry and meteorology were deeply intertwined. This interdisciplinary approach was ahead of its time and anticipated the modern field of atmospheric chemistry.
