Key Thinker Relationships

• Gandhi → MLK: King explicitly called Gandhi his "mentor." The Montgomery Bus Boycott (1955) was directly modeled on Gandhi's satyagraha. Both used non-violence against racial oppression, but in different contexts (colonial vs. segregation).
• Gandhi ↔ Ambedkar: The central debate in 20th-century Indian politics. Gandhi fought for caste reform within Hinduism; Ambedkar rejected Hinduism entirely. The Poona Pact (1932) and Gandhi's fast were turning points. Ambedkar's "Annihilation of Caste" (1936) is a direct critique.
• Gandhi ↔ Savarkar: Opposite poles of the freedom movement. Gandhi: non-violence, Hindu-Muslim unity, moral politics. Savarkar: armed revolution, Hindu nationalism, realpolitik. The Godse assassination (1948) was the tragic culmination of this divide.
• Nehru → Ambedkar: Both shaped modern India but from different positions. Nehru was the political architect; Ambedkar was the constitutional architect. They collaborated on the Constitution but disagreed on economic policy (Nehru's socialism vs. Ambedkar's state socialism).
• Adam Smith → Marx: Marx built his critique of capitalism on Smith's foundations. Smith described how markets work; Marx described how they exploit. The "labor theory of value" was developed by both, but to opposite ends.
• Marx → Che Guevara: Guevara was the practitioner of Marx's theory. The Cuban Revolution (1959) was the first successful Marxist revolution in the Americas. Guevara added foco theory (guerrilla warfare as the catalyst) to Marxist orthodoxy.
• Ambedkar → Mandela: Both fought caste/race-based discrimination through constitutional means. Mandela's anti-apartheid struggle and Ambedkar's anti-caste struggle share tactics: legal challenge, mass mobilization, and constitutional safeguards.
• Periyar → Ambedkar: Periyar (Dravidian movement) and Ambedkar (Dalit movement) were parallel reformers in South India. Both rejected Brahminical Hinduism, but Periyar focused on Tamil/Dravidian identity while Ambedkar focused on caste annihilation.
• Tagore → Gandhi: Tagore criticized Gandhi's nationalist excesses (renunciation of the 1919 knighthood). Gandhi admired Tagore's universalism but rejected his aestheticism. Their debate on nationalism vs. internationalism is still relevant.
