Civil Rights & Protest

Module 7 · What citizens must know about their rights and how to exercise them.

Fundamental Rights Criminal Procedure Police Powers Judicial Review

Overview

Civil rights are the bedrock of any democratic society. They are the legally enforceable guarantees that protect individuals from arbitrary state action and ensure dignity, equality, and liberty. In India, the concept of civil rights is deeply intertwined with the constitutional promise of justice — social, economic, and political — enshrined in the Preamble itself.

This module examines the constitutional architecture of civil rights in India, the evolution of judicial interpretation through landmark Supreme Court decisions, the specific protections afforded to vulnerable and marginalized communities, and the mechanisms available for enforcing these rights. It also confronts contemporary challenges — draconian anti-terror laws, internet shutdowns, and the erosion of civil liberties — that demand an informed and vigilant citizenry.
